The Difference Between a Primary and Secondary Logo
When I am creating a brand for a business I always include a primary and a secondary logo. And I usually get asked what that means??
So I thought I would explain the differences between the 2 in case you were wondering too!
Primary Logo
Your primary logo is your main logo.
It will most likely include your business name, a tagline if you have one and if you would like an icon or illustration.
You will usually find primary logos used for website headers or on the frontside of a business card.
Here are a few examples of primary logos that I created for past clients:
Secondary Logo
Think of your secondary logo as your primary logo’s little sister (or brother).
It is a simplified, fun version of the main logo using the same elements so the logos all stay cohesive.
The secondary logo will sometimes have the full business name in it but sometimes it can be as simple as an icon.
Below are the secondary logos that I created to go with the primary logos above.
When to use what?
Unless you are a popular brand that people recognize right away ( think Nike or Apple ) you should use your primary logo for most of your branding so that people don’t get confused with who you are.
But that doesn’t mean there is no use for your secondary logo!
Secondary logos are great for social media. It usually works way better in that small instagram profile pic. Or anytime you need a compact version of your logo, like for example a sticker to close up packaging.
I hope that was helpful! Always feel free to ask me any design questions!! I love to help out.
